How do i care for my human hair wig or topper?
Investing in a Frankie topper or wig means investing in quality. Each piece includes a care card with simple guidance to help you maintain its beauty and longevity.
Washing
How often you shampoo your hairpiece depends on how frequently you wear it. An active lifestyle or naturally oily hair may require more regular washing, as oils can transfer to the piece.
Before washing:
- Ensure all clips are closed
- Gently brush through with a paddle brush, starting from the ends and working upwards
Fill a sink with tepid water and lather a salon-quality, sulphate- and paraben-free shampoo. Holding the silk top to minimise tangling, gently dip and swirl the piece in the water. Avoid rubbing or twisting.
Rinse thoroughly in tepid water.
Apply a moisturising conditioner to your hands and distribute gently through the mid-lengths and ends. Avoid the silk top, as excessive product near the hand-tied knots can cause shedding.
Rinse thoroughly.
It is normal to experience minimal hair fall during washing.
For Blonde Pieces
Blonde tones require additional care.
- Leave conditioner on slightly longer
- Use a hydrating treatment mask monthly
- Use violet shampoo occasionally to neutralise brassiness
Important: Never apply violet shampoo directly to the hairpiece, especially the silk top, as this can cause staining or patchiness.
Drying
- Gently blot excess water with a towel (do not rub)
- Lay flat on an absorbent towel
- Allow to air dry overnight
Avoid excessive washing, as it can accelerate oxidation and reduce the lifespan of the hair.
We recommend washing no more than once per month where possible.
Lace Front Care
If you own a lace-front piece, handle with additional care during washing to avoid stretching or tearing the lace.
Preventing Tangling
Coats, scarves, and high collars can increase friction and tangling.
To minimise this:
- Use a lightweight leave-in treatment
- Brush gently and regularly
Can I use heat tools?
Heat styling is suitable for your Frankie topper or wig, as it is crafted from 100% Remy human hair. However, excessive heat can cause dryness, frizz, and reduced longevity.
Always use a salon-grade heat protectant and keep tools at a moderate temperature to preserve the softness and integrity of the hair.
How do I store my human hair wig or topper?
Gently brush your piece from the ends upward to prevent unnecessary tension and tangling. For toppers, ensure all clips are closed and place the piece on a mannequin head. For wigs, use a mannequin with a slightly smaller circumference to avoid stretching the cap.
When not in use, cover your hairpiece to protect it from dust and store it away from direct sunlight to minimise fading and preserve colour integrity.
Understanding Hair Density
Hair density refers to the amount of hair ventilated into a wig or topper cap, which determines how full the piece appears. For example, a 150% density will look fuller than a 130% density.
It’s important to note that there is no universal density standard across the industry. Each brand defines density differently. At Frankie, we use approximately 130% density for our toppers, creating a lightweight, natural finish without excessive bulk.
Wigs naturally carry slightly higher density due to cap construction, however they are carefully balanced to maintain realistic movement and appearance.
After extensive testing, we found that 130% provides the ideal balance — enough coverage for a seamless finish without unnecessary heaviness, slipping, or tension. Reducing density further may cause the silk or lace base to become visible, which we intentionally avoid.
If you prefer a different density, custom options are available upon request.

Salon-quality shampoo, conditioner, and a treatment mask
Choose sulphate- and paraben-free products. We particularly love the Pure Haircare range — organic, ultra-softening, and proudly Australian made.
A mannequin head
Ideal for storing and styling your piece. If you own a wig, select a mannequin with a slightly smaller circumference to prevent stretching.
A suction clamp stand
Secures to a flat surface and connects to your mannequin head, providing stability while styling.
A collapsible wig stand
Perfect for travel and convenient storage.
Stainless steel T-pins
Used to secure your piece to the mannequin head during styling.
Alligator clips
Helpful for sectioning the hair.

FAQ's Wigs
How to measure for a wig
Are you on the look out for a wig but unsure how to measure for one? Grab yourself a flexible tape measure and measure as shown in the chart. Then you will need to compare your measurements to those reflected on the Wig Chart. If you find that you are in-between sizes, opt for the larger size as the wigs have adjustable straps at the base. Another option is to use a wig grip which will lessen the circumference space. These are complimentary and are enclosed with your topper or wig.
Understanding the Hair We Use
We use 100% premium remy human hair. This type of hair is one of the softest and longest-lasting types of hair available.
The cuticle of the hair remains intact and the hair lays in one overlapping direction, with the open end towards the tip of the hair. With the cuticle intact, it reflects the natural shininess of the hair and minimises matting and tangling whilst looking completely natural in appearance.
No two wigs will look the same due to variance in the donor’s hair texture. Frankie’s hair is naturally straight and depending on the donor may have a slight wave. Frankie pieces are shown with curls/waves which have been achieved by using heat styling tools.

At Frankie Hair Toppers, consultations are personal, one-on-one appointments designed to guide you through what can often feel like an overwhelming and emotional journey.
Each consultation includes dedicated time, professional guidance, and the opportunity to try on a carefully selected range of 100% human hair wigs and toppers.

Matching Your Natural Hair
When wearing a full wig, your colour does not need to match your natural hair, as your entire head of hair will be covered.
If you are unsure about selecting a shade, you are welcome to share a photo taken in natural, indirect light so we can assist with guidance.
The colour you choose ultimately comes down to personal preference. Some women prefer to stay close to their natural shade, while others select a different tone to suit their style.
It is also important to note that human hair colour can appear slightly different depending on lighting conditions.
Choosing the Right Length
Frankie hair toppers and wigs are measured from the centre part down. As a general recommendation, we suggest adding two inches longer than your natural hair. This provides flexibility for your stylist to trim and blend the topper seamlessly with your existing hair. Who knows, you might just fall in love with the added length!
Styling Your Frankie Piece
Absolutely! Our hairpieces are versatile for styling in any way you desire.
Just like your natural hair, you can tie them in a low to mid ponytail or braid them during exercise. It might take a few practice runs, but styling your topper will soon become second nature.
If you lead an active lifestyle, it's advisable to tie your hairpiece or wear it in a secure style to minimize tangling. Like any hairpiece, occasional tangling may occur, making it crucial to brush out your topper after each wear.
Swimming in a Human Hair Wig
We do not recommend swimming in your human hair topper. Exposure to saltwater and chlorine can significantly shorten the lifespan of the hair.
Salt crystals can settle into the strands, causing dryness and increased tangling. Chlorine is particularly harsh, stripping moisture from the hair and leaving it dry, brittle, and more prone to breakage. It may also alter lighter shades, particularly blondes.
If you plan to swim regularly, we suggest considering a more affordable synthetic piece specifically for this purpose. This allows you to enjoy the water without compromising the integrity of your primary hairpiece.
